Medium-temperature martempering, austempering and secondary hardening of HSS. Excellent for spring steels, die steels and auto components.
SN-220 Tempering Salt is a medium-temperature nitrate/nitrite salt bath compound with a working range of 220°C–550°C. It covers three distinct heat treatment processes: martempering (medium-carbon and alloy steels), austempering (ductile and grey cast iron), and the secondary hardening / tempering cycle of HSS cutting tools after high-temperature hardening.
The higher minimum temperature (220°C vs. SN-140's 150°C) makes SN-220 the preferred bath for spring steels, alloy die steels and auto components where the target tempering temperature falls in the 300°C–500°C range — and for HSS secondary hardening where peak performance requires precise tempering at 540°C–560°C.

Where It's Used
Triple-temper cycle for M2, M35 and T1 HSS after high-temperature hardening. Peak hardness at 540°C–560°C temper temperature.
Austempering of ductile iron castings at 300°C–400°C to achieve bainitic structure. Better toughness than conventional normalise.
65Mn, EN45 and similar spring steels tempered at 300°C–450°C for optimal combination of hardness and flexibility.
H11, H13 and D2 die inserts tempered at 500°C–550°C. More uniform than air-tempering in a furnace.
Grade 10.9 and 12.9 fasteners in medium-alloy steel (42CrMo4) requiring tempering at 400°C–500°C.
Versatile bath that handles martempering, austempering and HSS tempering in a single installation for commercial HT shops.
