Scale-free hardening of HSS cutting tools and hot-work die steels at very high temperatures. Prevents decarburisation and surface oxidation.
SN HSS-972 Hardening Salt is a high-temperature salt bath compound for the hardening of High Speed Steel (HSS) cutting tools and hot-work die steels. The bath operates from 970°C up to 1300°C — the full range required for hardening M2, M35, T1, H13, H11 and similar grades that demand precise high-temperature austenitising.
The salt provides an oxygen-free, neutral environment at temperature. This prevents decarburisation — the most common cause of HSS tool failure after heat treatment — and eliminates the scale and oxide layer that would otherwise require additional grinding or blasting. Tools emerge bright and ready for quench transfer.

Where It's Used
Drills, taps, reamers, end mills and broaches in M2, M35 and T1 HSS grades. Full hardening at 1200°C–1260°C.
H11 and H13 die inserts and hot forging dies requiring controlled high-temperature hardening with no surface damage.
Cold-work and hot-work punches in D2, H13 and similar grades where surface integrity is critical to tool life.
High-speed steel thread rolling and knurling dies where any decarburisation causes premature thread failure.
Job shop hardening of mixed HSS tooling for multiple customers — single bath handles the full HSS hardening range.
Complex HSS broaches and form tools where grinding back a decarburised layer would destroy profile accuracy.
